Video Games

Postby euth on 11 Feb 2004 02:49 pm

here are some games i've bought recently:

    ps2:
  • silent hill 3
after i checked out some screens of silent hill 4, i started getting excited about the series again and decided to pick up sh3. i was pretty dissapointed with 2, but the screens of 3 looked pretty rad. i think the graphics are a big jump from 2. character design is nice, lighting is really nice, sound is really nice. voice acting and monster design are pretty bad. some of the voices are on par with blue stinger (dc) if any of you guys played that. i still haven't beat it, but it's a pretty neat game. i'd recommend it. it's only $30 now.
  • manhunt
fun game. mediocre environment design. character models are okay — better than most rockstar games. the violent deaths are over the top and always interesting. i'd recommend this game.

    xbox:
  • beyond good & evil
pretty neat game. nice graphics, kind of cheesy character design, a fun game. it's only $20 for all 3 systems now, so you might as well pick it up if you've got some extra scratch.
  • dead or alive volleyball
another game which had it's price cut, so i picked it up. i'm into these games where you can win items and stuff. i'm one of those suckers who actually got into monster rancher and the like. if you can find it cheap and aren't afraid to look like a dirty bastard buying this cheesy game, i say go for it.
  • max payne 2
this looked pretty rad for the pc, but since my pc sucks, i picked it up for the xbox since the ps2 version is supposed to be loaded with low res textures and slowdown. well, the xbox version has a nice framerate and resolution and the textures aren't too low res, but it still looks like ass. animation is way primitive, they chopped down the poly count big time from the pc version. it's a fun game with a nice story and great voice acting, but i'd wait until it goes on sale. it's not worth the $50 i paid for it.
  • splinter cell
this game was $5 if i bought max payne 2, so i picked it up. i'd heard good stuff about it, so imagine my surprise when i saw it in action. graphics look like ass. like much more than max payne. it's got some nice lighting every so often, but the low poly count, gay character design and animation and extremely shitty framerate are over the top. then the frame rate looks like it's about 25fps. jesus christ, this game was made a year or two ago, not in 1995. i haven't even gotten by the first level yet. i haven't had any desire to. this game isn't even worth the $5 i paid for it.

i haven't picked up anything for gamecube for a while. i haven't seen anything even remotely interesting for gc in months. zelda was the last game i picked up for gc and i haven't seen anything else since. i'm looking forward to the metal gear solid remake, though. that looks like it's shaped up since the initial info was released. that final fantasy game looks like it might be fun to, but i'll wait for that to hit the bargin bin.

i'm really looking forward to ninja gaiden on xbox. that game is looking rad as hell. after shinobi dissapointed me on ps2, i was looking forward to a good ninja game.

the suffering looks like it might be kind of fun too. that's comming out for ps2 and xbox.

do u not like double dash?

anyway um i haven't really "bought" any games for a while now other than KOTOR and Xlll for pc both.
they are both cool .
thirteen is pretty repetitive but still fun

KOTOR though is AWESOME!
it was supposedly very dissapointing for the x crate.
but it ROCKS for pc.
it feels linear when you play but then you think about it and its like "oh, i've made like 50 different plot turns in like an hour."
the plot is awesome too. Halfway through i had the BIGGEST chill run down my spine because of a plot turn. (i won't say anything else so i don't ruin it) if you've played it though you probably know what im talking about.

I don't know if you guys frown on "aquiring" things using various programs. but i get alot of stuff that way. i just got cable at home so when i go home this weekend im going to dl a bunch of stuff.

any suggestions on movies-games to get?

anyway also i bought raven shield althought it was a while ago it is really fun

good i figured out how to edit, i couldnt find the button, just testing.

I haven't purchased any PC/console games in a LONG time, aside from Metroid: Zero Mission and Sword of Mana :( [ no time, no money] but now that I'm settled a bit in Cali, and have a semi-steady income, I'll be buying Final Fantasy: CC, Mario Party 5 and Bust A Move for Gamecube. I have bought a few shareware PPC apps for my new Dell Axim, and will maybe get a few more soon, [getting a smartphone in the next month, gonna need some time-wasters for that thing too] of all the games I'm dying to grab hold of, mostly, I'm drooling over UT2K4, Tribes: Vengence, and the obligatory Doom III/HL2 stuff.

Anyone else got some "MUST HAVE" recommendations for my atrophied 'Cube?

[aside from the obvious, Metroid, Eternal Darkness etc]

I didn't buy anything, they were all Christmas gifts. Here's what I got though: (All on Gamecube)

Prince of Persia:
Doesn't look as ridiculously fantastic as the PC version, but better controls from what I can tell and just an incredible game. A little short, but still got a good number of hours of play time out of it. Not the best game if you're big into storylines, but I'm all about gameplay so screw it.

Veautiful Joe:
Holy Christ this game is incredible! Again, if you're looking for a good storyline, don't touch this game. At least Prince of Persia tried, but this has the loosest story ever. The important things however are that the graphics are phenominal (By far the best use of cell shading I've seen), the gameplay is innovative (Giving you the ability to move in slow motion, mach speed, ultra close mode, and any combination of 2 or all 3), and best of all in my opinion, it is hard as fuck. I didn't bother playing the game on kid mode because there's no point, but I got to a boss that while I kinda figured out how to defeat him, the execution of this is just a seemingly impossible feat. Maybe not for the casual gamer, but if you're looking for a challenge since most games these days are far from, this is a great one.

Mario Kart: Double Dash:
I'm not nearly as thrilled by this game as everyone else. It's Mario Kart, and Mario Kart has always been fun. In this game the different characters and karts seem to be far less balanced than in previous games though, and while the inclusion of 2 people per kart seems cool, I'm not sure I really dig it. I also am disapointed that there are no more shell shields, and that you can't hold items behind you, which makes even more sense to be able to do now. Maybe I'm just playing the game wrong though.

F-Zero: GX: (Or something, I forget the subtitle)
I never promised that all these games are terribly just new, just that they're the games I got recently. Anyway, it's a great racing game with some phenominal looking tracks. This is another very difficult game which makes it even more appealing. Some of the tracks get a little too crazy for my taste, and I have actually been unable to complete even one lap of these tracks in grand prix mode.

I havent purchased a videogame in months. I was going to get SSX3, but that game will surely drop down to 20 bucks within the next couple of months so im just going to wait a little bit on that one

I just preordered Psyvarier for the dreamcast. Yes i know ic ould have downloaded it, but id rather have the authentic original for my dreamcast which has never seen a burned image. Burned images shorten the life your DC quite a bit and i plan on keeping mine for as long as possible.

Also, im really looking forward to Gradius V

since i bought my xbox three months ago i've only bought two games and haven't played the tetris/star wars shit that came with it.

nhl 2003: blows compared to nhl94 on snes (fuck sega). ea has done nothing innovative for this series in years and instead loads it with graphic bullshit when gameplay and franchise/trading shit sorely needs to be addressed. i plan on trying out espn's take on hockey when 2005 comes out.

star wars knights of the old republic: next to old (snes era) final fantasy my favorite series was always baldur's gate for pc. so imagine my thrill when i found out bioware made a star wars game. the graphics ain't so hot but that's not the point of this type of game. it's all about interaction and immersion with this sort of shit and they totally nail it. this bastard stole my life for a few weeks and it was well worth it except... the ending is a total piece of shit. and this is a fucking travesty for this type of game because it's all about busting your ass to get the cool storybook ending. instead they flash some shit that'd be better suited for contra 3 or some shit.

other than that, who has time for video games?

signed,
my mac can't play games for shit

by the way, for those of you who didn't read the topic title, it's "What games have you purchased in the last few months", not "Post here if you haven't purchased any games in the last few months".

there seems to be a little confusion here.

i only own a ps2, so...

Tiger Woods 2004: dope as hell. online is pretty fun, make yur own dude, you can get it to look pretty close to whatever you want. make your own tattoo's, shirt logos is a cool feature too. it's just a chillin game which i like a lot. fun to play with a friend who's equal, you can talk all kinds of shit.

Deer Hunter: ya know what, yur either gonna hate this game and never want to touch it, or you'll be like wow... i can actually get into this game. it has online, but i havn't tried it. basically it's all about rompin through the woods (standing still when necessary, making calls, etc) and trying to fullfill requirements. ie: shoot a "big" bear with a muzzleloader, shoot a white tail deer from x feet away without a scope, etc.

Socom II: if anyone tries to compare this to CS they should have their balls removed. this game is badass, and online is just flat out fun. time in between rounds is too long though, and aiming with a controller w/ a tactical shooter like this can be frustrating... but once you get used to it, well...i just tear shit up now.

Fifa 2004: bought it cuz i thought online would be really fun. it's buggy as hell, online is always choppy (laggy, and it's not my connection). graphics are good, but i heard winning evolution 11 or whatever is the one that's supposed to be really good is... well, a lot better, but it doesn't have online. i just really wanted an online soccer game but this just didn't cut it.

fyi: if you plan on buying a network adapter for ps2, get the sony one. the generic ones are junk and don't work with some games. it's worth the extra bones.

i can't WAIT WAIT WAIT for gran turismo 4. ONLINE BABY. i'm unbeatable in gran turismo. i race with such finesse it's ridiculous. i can't wait to race people with my own fully customized ride. i already know this game is gonna take over my life.

Prince of persia
- OK game. The game is very linear which is something I liked. The gfx are very good too. The controls are a bit weird though. Ive never felt like I had "control" over my character since the controls are so "forgiving". You just can't make any mistake. There's only 1 way and 1 way only to reach the end of every level. Theres also a delay everytime you attack something which makes it more realist, but its not just as fun as devil may cry.

Simpsons hit and run
- Cool game. Basically, a rip-off of grand theft auto set in the simpsons universe.

I got Prince of Persia (XBX) and I can safely say that it's a top-fucking-notch puzzle game. If you liked Ico (PS2), get Prince of Persia. I also got Munch's Oddysee (XBX); it's a great platformer. I picked up Knights of the Old Republic (XBX), but I'm having trouble keeping my attention on it. I guess I'm just not much of a role-player. I got MGS2:Substance (PS2) and re-discovered why I never play skateboarding games: I totally suck.

I traded in my copy of Splinter Cell (XBX); I just hated the controls. It was nowhere near as easy to use as Metal Gear Solid 2.

I'm looking forward to Halo 2 (XBX) and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (<strike>NGC</strike>GCN). Ah, MGS1 re-done with the MGS2 engine; hell, yeah.

just a side note, blowout, but the acronym for the cube is actually GCN, for Gamecube Nintendo. NGC is neo-geo colour. Just catering to my OCD.

I don't know what OCD stands for, but I assume he's talking about the Neo Geo POCKET Color, which would be NGPC. Nintendo and their magazine are the only ones to use the acronym GCN, I'm guessing because it conflicts with somebody's trademark. Wouldn't want a WWF type of situation goin on, would we?

OCD = Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

I just read the article <a href="#26701">euth linked</a> and I can safely say that Twin Snakes looks like total awesomesauce.

A WWF type situation would be hilarious! That thing went on for years after the WWWF changed it's name to WWF. I was still shocked that when they finally lost the lawsuit and could no longer keep the name WWF that they change to WWE rather than WWFE which was, and I believe still is, the name of their stock.

#edit: Yeah, it's obsessive compulsive disorder. Deal with it.
