Ghost is a worthless piece of shit. I got a copy (on disc, that is) for my dad and it repeatedly threw massive runtime errors when trying to install. They couldn't even compile it right for their own disc.

Try DriveImage XML instead.

It's NOT Ghost-Win. It's a very sturdy, tiny piece of DOS software you stick on your thumb drive and go.

I deploy hundreds of PCs using it and have never run into a problem with a good PC.

Ghost-Win sucks the shit off donkey nuts. I agree.

Ghost it to a file on another drive or to the thumb drive itself if it's big enough.
You'd need to ghost to file for each partitions.
I have all the files needed to make your drive bootable, etc. It's a pretty quick process.
Edit, you could make the external drive do it too, but it'd need to be FAT32, which sucks.

I just got Font Agent Pro 4 and it's working quite swimmingly. I like it a lot better than suitcase. Serials are all around the web, too. If this app doesn't fuck up on me in the next few weeks I'll buy the full version ($99).

In other news, I just grabbed 4 gigs of extra ram and Windows won't start up anymore (but the computer will boot). It freezes on the Windows 7 glowy thing. Any ideas? I'm going to dick with the BIOS later and see if they are defective by themselves. It should be an identical pair to what my machine normally runs... also my mobo supports 8 gb so I'm not sure what the deal is.

#edit

Bummer. The font agent didn't like you. What version of the adobe suite are you using?

Are you loading postscript fonts? Typically I find that I'll have to restart Photoshop/Illustrator after I load ps fonts but otf/ttf will register immediately.

I have a few upgrades you should get to make your experience more nifty.

1) Switcher: http://insentient.net/ (expose for pc)
2) Taskbar Tweaker: http://rammichael.com/?proj=29 (makes it so you don't have to click individual thumbnails from open windows in the task bar)

... and also you'll find that quicklaunch is missing. HOWEVER, you can make your own if you right-click the taskbar and look in the Toolbars menu. I made two of them, OSX-ish, with browsers on the left and apps on the right. You might also want to pin/unpin programs to the taskbar (with right click options) depending on how you see fit.

Enjoy!

speaking of nifty tools

Stardocks fences is pretty cool. The basic version is free.
http://www.stardock.com/products/Fences/

It groups your desktop icons in boxes like this, when icons overflow, a scrollbar will appear when you hover the fence box
http://blog.softwareload.de/wp-content/ ... fences.jpg
Image

You can hide all your desktop icons by double clicking the desktop.
You can also make the fences fully transparent.
The pro version has even cooler features. You can tell it in which fence box new icons/files that you drop on your desktop will go, by file type, size etc. You can also style them in every which way, even with background images.
Unlike the sample picture above, if you arrange the boxes neatly it looks pretty cool too.

I really should look back through the board to see how often I rebuild my PC or build a new one. I think I may have an illness. [though, if the parts are free/trade/cheap, does it really matter?]

I just swapped out my Core2Duo E8xxx system for a Core i7 920. I tried a 6-disk RAID 5 for my Win 7 install but god damn is it a resource hog when it's doing a lot of small writes. I'll be relegating that to storage and going back to a single 1.5TB drive for my Windows install.

Haven't touched the GPU yet, but I've been offered a really cheap BFG 280 OC and I think I'm going to take the offer. I think I can still get close enough to $90 for my 9800GTX+ to justify it.

The sad thing is, I almost never encountered a game or game settings that ever brought the Core2Duo/9800GTX to it knees, or even close.

Maybe I do need help. :ded:

Let me know if you want to sell the 9800gtx soon and the manufacturer. I want to run SLI and since I've never done it before I'm super stoked to do so.

I actually listed it on Craigslist about an hour after I posted that and someone's coming over at 7 to get it. Sorry man.

I would tell them to eat it, but they wanted a bunch of other PC junk I listed as well, so I'd be out a lot more than just a couple of bucks.

If he flakes, how soon do you want it? It's an XFX 9800 GTX+. I'd like to get rid of it ASAP, since I've already arranged to pick up the 280 today.

I'll let you know.

Uh... yeah a 6 disk RAID for a home system? I'm sorry dude but that's stupid. I'm still rocking a Q6600 for CPU, I don't play a lot of games on the PC anymore but so far I haven't had any problems.

Bumping up my Q6600 to Windows 7 64-bit and 8 gigs of RAM feels like a whole new system. Beats the crap out of the Mac Pro's I've been using at work.

Yeah I run 6 GB of ram, I usually have 2 VMs of XP and Vista running too for testing crap and my system runs like a dream. I think the raptor drive I bought has helped a lot, can't wait to get a SSD someday.

Yeah, I've done RAID5 as a backup solution before and I run a lot of large network equipment in various RAID configurations at work.

Figured I'd test the waters on RAID5 for Windows install. Turns out it sucks a fat one.

I'd try RAID1+0 but I'm just too fucking tired of ripping this PC apart.

lack0Fdesign: let me know if you want that card. the guy flaked, as predicted, and I'm either gonna sell it to you or eBay it tomorrow.

Why use RAID at home (esp. RAID5)? It's redundancy, not backup.
