New painting I just started

Postby SilentSounD on 19 Feb 2010 11:42 am

so.. I just started painting in watercolor.. this is my second try..

I know it's a little flat, and the light sources are not very defined, or are conflicting...

let me know what you think so far

someone once told me there are no convex lines on the human body. looking forward to seeing more finished work from you mike!

#edit: i think i mean concave... all humps, no dips. that's at least a rule i sorta apply to figure drawing anyway, even if it's not the case 100% of the time.

i think it looks nice so far, especially for your second try and especially since you don't seem to be referring to a model. (did the image come from inside your head?)

i like the build up of colors in the last image but i really like how vibrant the colors of the towel looked in the first. i think you've probably already seen with watercolor that it's really easy to go from vibrant to muddy; i think that's what makes it so hard and maybe that's where you run into a couple of problems.

you have a really interesting sense of color (the purple on the back of her neck is very soft and almost glows) and i think you could push it more by experimenting with complimentary colors to highlight and shade with.

once piece of advice i have is to work a little faster. it might be beneficial for you, since you're just starting, to have traced this woman onto several papers and just do several quick studies. and i mean very quick, like a couple of minutes each. i think you'll find that it might be easier to define mass with just a couple of strokes of color.

and as far as watercolor, i think this is a really awesome example and i've found it inspirational many times so i hope you do to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/onnder/set ... 170399757/

The colour work, and the form and shape you've created through it, is great. Really great, actually.

As for the pose, the scene, the moment... I don't care for it. Perhaps it'll mean something more to me when it's finished, but for now it does nothing for me (not to say that that's your aim, of course). But then I've never really been taken by these 'in the moment' works.

So, I've been sketching in Oil (trying to get used to the brush, vs a Pen / Pencil)

I know this is kind of miss-proportioned, but it's just a rough sketch / under painting.

This post will serve as documentation of the process I used to complete this painting.
