Video Games |
here are some games i've bought recently:
ps2:
- silent hill 3
after i checked out some screens of silent hill 4, i started getting excited about the series again and decided to pick up sh3. i was pretty dissapointed with 2, but the screens of 3 looked pretty rad. i think the graphics are a big jump from 2. character design is nice, lighting is really nice, sound is really nice. voice acting and monster design are pretty bad. some of the voices are on par with blue stinger (dc) if any of you guys played that. i still haven't beat it, but it's a pretty neat game. i'd recommend it. it's only $30 now.
- manhunt
fun game. mediocre environment design. character models are okay -- better than most rockstar games. the violent deaths are over the top and always interesting. i'd recommend this game.
xbox:
- beyond good & evil
pretty neat game. nice graphics, kind of cheesy character design, a fun game. it's only $20 for all 3 systems now, so you might as well pick it up if you've got some extra scratch.
- dead or alive volleyball
another game which had it's price cut, so i picked it up. i'm into these games where you can win items and stuff. i'm one of those suckers who actually got into monster rancher and the like. if you can find it cheap and aren't afraid to look like a dirty bastard buying this cheesy game, i say go for it.
- max payne 2
this looked pretty rad for the pc, but since my pc sucks, i picked it up for the xbox since the ps2 version is supposed to be loaded with low res textures and slowdown. well, the xbox version has a nice framerate and resolution and the textures aren't too low res, but it still looks like ass. animation is way primitive, they chopped down the poly count big time from the pc version. it's a fun game with a nice story and great voice acting, but i'd wait until it goes on sale. it's not worth the $50 i paid for it.
- splinter cell
this game was $5 if i bought max payne 2, so i picked it up. i'd heard good stuff about it, so imagine my surprise when i saw it in action. graphics look like ass. like much more than max payne. it's got some nice lighting every so often, but the low poly count, gay character design and animation and extremely shitty framerate are over the top. then the frame rate looks like it's about 25fps. jesus christ, this game was made a year or two ago, not in 1995. i haven't even gotten by the first level yet. i haven't had any desire to. this game isn't even worth the $5 i paid for it.
i haven't picked up anything for gamecube for a while. i haven't seen anything even remotely interesting for gc in months. zelda was the last game i picked up for gc and i haven't seen anything else since. i'm looking forward to the metal gear solid remake, though. that looks like it's shaped up since the initial info was released. that final fantasy game looks like it might be fun to, but i'll wait for that to hit the bargin bin.
i'm really looking forward to ninja gaiden on xbox. that game is looking rad as hell. after shinobi dissapointed me on ps2, i was looking forward to a good ninja game.
the suffering looks like it might be kind of fun too. that's comming out for ps2 and xbox. |

Posting web portals are cool, too. I visit netdiver.net and webcreme.com, personally, but they don't always do it for me.

Hidden Switch |
| I've gotten quite sick of having to use the defaults command to see the hidden files on my Mac, so I threw together this little app in a shell script and Automator to flip that bit for me. Could someone download it and let me know if it works for them? (Mac only, obviously, and requires Tiger or higher.)

What's going on |
I thought this would be interesting. what's going on in your life right now. job, relationships, money, hobbies, sports, trouble, near future. i thought it'd be neat to see where everyone's at right now...
right NOW i'm studying for my Kansas Life and Health insurance exam. i quit HR Block to sell insurance for my step-dad's company. he's like... area manager or something and makes rediculous cash (6 figures just in residual income, as in the shit that comes in automatically every year). supposadly there's no reason i shouldn't make 50 my first year, or 6 figures my 3rd.
so if this all works out, i'll be looking at getting a new car. been driving my first car since i was 16. '93 honda accord with 181k+ miles on it. just replaced the brakes up at my dad's house last weekend, took most of the day sunday.
my dad's going through a divorce from my step-mom. he divorced her and not only does she get half of everything (even though literally nothing was hers and she never paid for anything except groceries), now they're saying my dad will have to pay some maintenence bullshit because she's got a bad back problem and can't get insurance. of course she could get a JOB and get automatically covered...
so now he may lose his house, boats, tools... everything he's worked for his entire life. but he's been very faithful (god) in the last few years so he's definately relying on that a lot for guidance and support. definately not the best of times.
things seem to go back and forth with my girlfriend. i havn't figured out if the problem is me or her yet. i think i'm just not used to moving this slow with a girl. we havn't fucked yet and it's been... at least a month or so. this is something new to me and i think if i would just chill out and be patient i'll find it much more rewarding in the end.
other than that... back to studying for this damn test. if i pass this thing, i garuntee you there will be some drunk/high/fucked up posts from me thursday night.

| I am sick and fucking tired of the mac fanboys. I'm not talking about the people who like apple better than M$, I'm talking about the idiots that make up apple fanboys. Apple is playing the same game M$ has been playing for years. Ripping off good ideas and making it look like their own. They may have a marginally better product, but they're still greedy capitalist pigs.
I'm fucking sick of .NET/C#, the fuckers just stole their shit from Java and made a few tweaks.
I'm stick of the shitload of ASP jobs due to the fact that M$ only has ground in this market because they donate curriculum's to colleges and brainwash idiot-IT-wanna-bes.

Where are some decent places to meet new people? Bars and clubs are definitely crossed off my list.
How long do you think someone should wait to enter a new relationship after leaving a previous relationship? I know that everyone "heals" differently, but I'd like to hear what you all have to say.
What's the best way to get over someone? I'm fond of someone who obviously doesn't feel the same way, but I just can't let go. |

USB 3 is here! |
EDIT: link removed as it no longer works.
Ten times the speed of USB 2? Check.
Theoretical transfer speed of 4.7Gb!!!! Check.
Pic of beautiful Taiwanese girl to demonstrate it? Check.
The clever, clever part is how the new USB plugs will be backwards compatible with USB 2 and 1. They've simply added more data connectors behind the existing ones you see:
If prices aren't too bad I think this will be a real boost to backing up speeds and so on. According to PC World's article USB 3.0 Finally Arrives the new format also "uses one-third the power of USB 2". Cool. |

The Sweet Deals Thread |
| just ordered these:
- 100pk Ritek 8x DVD+R - $35 after $10 rebate.
- 2 50pk Samsung 4x DVD+R $48. these are manufactured by taiyo yuden, which means they're top quality. i use these to burn stuff i want to archive. the pi error rate is insanely low with these -- you get absolutely perfect burns. i'm talking like under 10 per block (280 per block is considered a successful burn if you guys aren't up on the dvd media tests). the story is, the more pi errors you've got, the less likely it is that your disc will be readable on dvd players. there's also po errors, which are uncorrectable errors -- if you've got any of these, you've either got some really bad media or a bad burner. riteks are pretty good, though. the quality seems to vary from disc to disc, though. not consistent like the yudens and not as high quality period.
---
post any good deals you find here, fellas. i figure we might as well have a thread devoted to sweet deals we find rather than posting them all individually. |

What do you want Barack to do? |
Well, Barack Obama is in and is taking over for George W. Bush's shattered administration. Now the question is, what sorts of things do you really want the President to do? (This doesn't have to be in his first hundred days or anything, but what would you like to see him do, specifically?)
Here are some things that I would like to see:
- Close down Guantánamo Bay
- Open up relations with Cuba
- Close a bunch of unnecessary American bases (I think we're pretty safe from Germany and Japan at this point.)
- Impose a 30- to 60-day moratorium on foreclosures
- Cut GM and Chrysler loose from the government teat
- Re-sign the Kyoto Protocol
- Get us out of Iraq (by 2010, if not sooner)
- Cut defense spending as part of his "line-by-line review" of the budget (We don't need a Cold War military right now.)
- Some sort of protection for gays and lesbians in public service, especially the removal of "Don't ask, don't tell".
There are other things, like universal healthcare, which I think are highly unlikely to pass, so I won't post them here. However, feel free to post several times and discuss! |

as of yet untitled series |
so this is done. still need to varnish these but the work is set. i'm just going to copy the blog post i wrote for it instead of re-writing it all for the board.
---
So I've had these on the shelf in rotation of production for quite some time now. But today, they're done. I'm going to have Rob help me varnish them all with a matte coat just so all the mixed media shit stays down and in place, and after that we'll see. I've had multiple inquiries as to whether or not these will be for sale and at what cost, and the answer is some will be, I'm not sure which ones, and they won't be expensive. I'll only want to recoup the costs of the series (which was about $300 in boards and maybe $60 in magazines and paints), so I'll sell these for as little as I can to break even.
But enough about capitalist bullshit heresey. Here's the series, which is still untitled (more on that in a bit). The works, however, are titled, so everything after the jump. Everything is on 12x12 gesso or hard board with a 3/4 inch cradle as to make the hanging process easier.
As I Slowly Disappear
Thinking Of You
Beneath Electric Skies
Every Little Failure
Falls Into Place
"Every One Is Looking At You."
"And All They Do Is Laugh."
It Ends When You're Dead
Kill Your Friends
Love Your Enemy
We Can Be Something
Before We Fall Apart
As I like my art to be cohesive in some sense, obviously putting the titles together forms the overall idea;
Quote:
As I slowly disappear thinking of you beneath electric skies, every little failure falls into place. "Everyone is looking at you and all they do is laugh." It ends when you're dead.
Kill your friends. Love your enemy. We can be something before we fall apart.
I had the titles worked out before even all the paintings were started, and with a few minor changes everything seemed to work out. Each piece is about something different individually (It Ends When You're Dead is about discovering and involving yourself in a life of art, Falls Into Place is about long term relationships, "And All They Do Is Laugh" is about being in middle / high school and hating it while thinking you have it figured out - just to name a few), but the series as a whole is about growing up in the 21st century.
I'd originally titled the series What We Reveal First To Strangers, but the events of my life in the past month have changed the direction of the works. With all this new technology, I wanted to use collage as a way to keep a visceral relationship with my work and old magazines proved a viable mirror into an age that some people in this country seem to think was better or somehow different than where we're at now. However it is all the same; the ongoing theme that sex sells, that women should have a specific place, that war is a viable option in established society, that art is a fools errand... it's not that these ideas have changed much since 1950. The rhetoric isn't different, somebody just turned up the volume and made it all digital.
The bookend pieces are probably the most important to me, as I tried to illustrate the journey from discovering the path you want to take your life on (initially) to where you want to go (and will most likely fail to get), and how along the way everything else is sold to you. Since a majority of time is taken up by jobs in America, material goods are valuable because they don't take up time. The commodity time is too valuable for most to purchase and so plastic is next, and that dictates a majority of the way we spend our off-work hours.
Unfortunately due to this, we have a media that advertises to us at our worst - in any decade - to get that chance and we lose so much in adhering to what the products want us to be. And at the end, all I'm buying is anything to fill a square inch of the void that is left by what anyone really wants; a hand to hold or a smile that comes with making someone you care for laugh. The real winners are the ones who, somehow, are able to get this; the cars, the houses, the clothes are all bullshit. Even engagement rings and lavish house parties are for the birds. It's about honest connection for the closest of times, the texture of life through the best and worst.
So that's that. One of these days I'll drink too much and figure out a series title. If you or anyone you know wants to have an art show including these, let me know and we can work something out.
----
anyway. there you have it dudes. hope you like. |

| So I'm MP3ing all my Foo Fighters CDs when I look at the list of tracks for their album One By One, and it kind of flows into a poem. So I added a few more words of my own and came up with this below. (Not meant to be a great work of poetry or anything, just a throwaway thing.)
All My Life I've been
Low.
I have to Have It All in
Times Like These.
I hear a Disenchanted Lullaby and realise I'm
Tired Of You.
Time to play Halo for a while.
Lonely As You are without me, you'll soon
Overdrive your car one day,
Burn Away and then
Come Back to me.
Can anyone think of any other albums which might flow into a poem or very short story like this one? |

Christmas loot thread 2009 |
| The gifts might have been a bit more modest this year, but what did you give and/or get? I'll just stick to the highlights, not the socks and PJs kind of stuff :)
Got:
- A projector from the 'rents that will be really nice for watching some movies.
- Some phone-related accessories (which I actually wanted).
- Various clothes that I like and can really use.
- An original painting by my grandmother.
Gave:
- A decent cutlery block set for my mom (who never understood the difference quality knives make until she used mine...then she wanted some).
- Ordered some custom photo calendars for my aunts and grandma, which didn't cost too much but turned out to be their favorite gifts of all because of the sentimental value.
- Very nice pair of earbuds for my lady, because that was what she actually wanted.
How 'bout the rest of you? |

Avatar. |
| Awesome sci-fi with great visuals or a polished turd?
Personally, I thought it was the former. Yeah of course the plot didn't strain my brain too much (at all), but the sci-fi story was pretty much on par with Aliens, IMO. Though I will admit it was pretty cheesy at points.

COMICS! |
More people should read comics.
Newsarama.com posted the full first issue of some new titles through Image comics.
I read all 4 of these (plus a shit load of other stuff...) and I can attest that they are all incredibly awesome.
Fear Agent
Quote:
The Fear Agents are no more. Once known throughout the universe for driving three invading alien races from Earth, they stood as a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Now, Heath Huston drunkenly scuttles across the galaxy as an alien exterminator – the last of their ranks. Combining the aesthetic elements of all three of the genres that made EC comics the high water mark of sequential storytelling – science fiction, war, and horror – Heath’s adventures take readers on monthly jaunts to brave new worlds overrun by jellyfish brains, wild ape-men and rickety robots bent on intergalactic domination!
PREVIEW:http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/FearAgent/FearAgent01issue.htm
Girls
Quote:
Ethan Daniels is a typical bachelor who suffers from one, infallible truth: dealing with the opposite sex can be complicated. One night, he bumps into a mysterious woman who will change his life… and maybe even the world.
PREVIEW: http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Gi ... 1issue.htm
Battle Pope
Quote:
When he’s not leadin’ mass, he’s out kickin’ ass! After the Rapture the sole protector of the sinning masses is Battle Pope, and his trusty sidekick, Jesus. They’re the last line of defense in a world overrun with demons and depravity.
PREVIEW: http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Ba ... 1issue.htm
Fell
Quote:
Detective Richard Fell is transferred over the bridge from the big city to Snowtown, a feral district whose police roster numbers three-and-a-half people (one detective has no legs). Dumped in this collapsing urban trashzone, Richard Fell is starting all over again. In a place where nothing seems to make any sense, Fell clings to the one thing he knows to be true: Everybody's hiding something. Even him.
PREVIEW: http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Fe ... 1Issue.htm
ALSO...
Slacker should read this if he isn't already.
DMZ
Quote:
A new monthly series about the ultimate embedded war journalist trapped in a most unlikely war zone: the streets of New York City. Matty Roth, a naïve young man and aspiring photojournalist, lands a dream gig following a veteran war journalist into the heart of the DMZ. Things soon go terribly wrong and Matty finds himself lost and alone in a world he's only seen on television. There, he is faced with a choice: try to find a way off the island, or make his career with an assignment most journalists would kill for. But can he survive in a war zone long enough to report the truth?

Rage Against The Machine to top UK Christmas chart? |
| Not sure if you guys have heard about this one, but it's ace. Rage Aagainst The Machine have re-released Killing In The Name, and it's currently the best seller of the week in the UK. The point is, this is the week we get the traditional Christmas No.1 single. No-one should care of course what that is, only it used to be an original song every year. Except that for the last few years, Simon Cowell and The X-Factor (think American Idol) has released a single by the winner of that TV 'talent' show, just in time to grab the No.1 Christmas slot. This would be OK if the songs weren't always dreadful ballads! Now Facebook have fought back by getting people to download RATM's song instead. It's working! So far they are outselling the X-Factor song by thousands. The problem is that it's on downloads only (I think) and the other single is now also on CD. Still, it's grabbed all the media's attention here in the UK, and put RATM firmly back in the spotlight! Plus Killing In The Name is getting loads of airplay, which is always good! Gotta support this one! |

| Until 2007, I honestly thought these songs contained the following lyrics:
Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance:
"No monkey man can win my love,
Its sweetness that I'm thinking of."
Turns out it's "moneyman"!
Thomas Dolby - Screen Kiss:
"Do all the Russians look the same,
Only there's a movie
I wouldn't pay to see again."
Turns out it's "rushes"!

New Portfolio Up / CSS / JQuery Bug |
| Hello fellows,
I just put my new portfolio up, and it has a little bit of JQuery going to make the fading effects. This works perfectly on Chrome but on Firefox / IE there's a little 2 px jump to the down/right.
http://one10interactive.com/
You'll see that in the jquery code I have 2 px shifts in there... but that's because the fading overlay images were getting out of alignment before (right now it's an img stacked over its background). So there's something happening in Firefox / IE as soon as the JQuery initializes that forced me to compensate on a browser-basis. Any idea?
Uhhh... yeah. But if you don't have any ideas / tech stuff, feel free to let me know what you think of the page :) Some links are down right now but I'll be patching and polishing everything up soon (I'm looking for a new job for the new year).
Thanks! |

A hopefully simple PHP question |
hi. So i'm making a website for my friend, although i guess 'website' is too strong a term. At the moment this is it:
http://www.isrogerfedererthegreatestever.net/
what he wants to happen when you visit the site is that you are presented (randomly) with the answer: 'yes', or 'no'.
So what i figured to do was to have two different pages, one which has the 'yes' picture (and corresponding green background), and one which has the 'no' picture (and corresponding red background) and then have a (probably) php thing which chooeses randomly between the two and displays it.
thing is, i no almost nothing about php, i can sort of read it but that's about it. i found this on some forum:
Quote:
php
$mypages = array("mypage1.html", "mypage2.html", "mypage3.html", "mypage4.html", "mypage5.html");
$myrandompage = $mypages[mt_rand(0, count($mypages) -1)];
echo $myrandompage;
(i took out the angle bracket and question mark thing, so that the code text would display)
so i just made that exact code the index.php at the domain and had the two pages as the array. but as you can see, that echo only returns the filename not the contents of the file. What am i doing wrong? should that echo statement only return the filename?
cool, thanks for the help. |

Tips on quitting a job? |
| Hello fellows (and ladies),
I'm about to quit my job to work for someone else, and I'm not sure the best way to go about it. I've honestly never quit before as a surprise... and I'm fairly certain that as soon as I leave the web department is going to implode.
So for the sake of my friends in the company I feel bad that I'm bailing, and I want to leave on the best terms possible. Most people I've talked to have just told me to give my two weeks and not worry about it -- it's the company's fault, after all, for making me unsatisfied to the point of quitting and not realizing it.
What do you think? Am I just being too concerned, and business is business?
Thanks! |

For the holidays... |
| I was thinkin, maybe it would be fun to do a white elephant gift exchange for anyone on the board that wants to participate. Here's how I think it could work:
- This thread could be the sign up list, those interested post here and say so
- One person randomly assigns each participant with a name to send a gift
- That same person gets mailing addresses for all participants, so that no one knows who got their name, until they actually receive the package
- We send the gifts by mail/ups/fedex/etc.
- Each person should probably be assigned someone on their own continent...
So, what do you think? |

Twitter Js help |
| Im doing a site for my girlfriends mother. I added a twitter status widget but its very hard for me to modify this widget because its mostly js.
Would appreciate it if anyone could tell me how i can get rid of the username (blue)
site: http://test.gesundundschönsein.de/index.html
Js: http://test.gesundundschönsein.de/scripts/widget.js
css: http://test.gesundundschönsein.de/css/widget.css
At first i was using this widget http://monitter.com/ , which was very easy to modify.
But the problem with that one is that it only displays live tweets. It only shows you the latest tweets that were send since you opened the site.
It would be even better if someone could modify the monitter.com widget to show the last couple of tweets instead of live incoming tweets. Its way smaller and simpler.
Here are the monitter files if anyone is interested in trying to modify this one http://monitter.com/widget/monitter_widget_v1_1.zip |

Contraception (in relationships) |
| So I had a conversation with my (ex)girlfriend several times that I never expected to be a big deal... but it ended up causing her to explode with much fire and anger.
The first time was asking if she'd go on the pill, the second time was asking if she'd go on the copper IUD since she was against hormonal treatment. She thinks I'm ridiculous and insensitive for even suggesting she go through taking pills or getting something inserted, and I think she's ridiculous because it's not a big deal (I'd do it if I could). Plus condoms have a relatively high failure rate (2% in the first year of perfect use) and I want to be exceedingly cautious for her sake.
Thoughts? What do you guys do in your long-term relationships? |

emigre 70 |
http://www.emigre.com/EB.php?id=125
i am pretty like, strapped for cash but i still dropped $60 on this the second i got the email.
Quote:
Emigre and Gingko Press are proud to announce the publication of Emigre No.70: The Look Back Issue – Celebrating 25 Years in Graphic Design. The 512-page book covers the best of a quarter century of Emigre magazine – one of the most influential design publications ever.
During the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, graphic design was experiencing one of its most exciting and transformative periods. The Apple Macintosh computer had been introduced, design schools were exploring French linguistic theory, the vernacular had become a serious source of study and inspiration, the design and manufacture of typefaces was suddenly opened up to everyone who could use a computer, and for the first time in the United States, New York City was no longer the place to look for the latest developments in graphic design. And in Berkeley, California, across the bay from Silicon Valley, Emigre magazine, like no other, recognized the significance of the events, and became both a leading participant and a keen observer of this innovative international design scene, generating a body of work and ideas that still resonate today.
Fueled by Emigre's successful digital type foundry, the magazine became one of the most popular and controversial graphic design magazines of its time. 69 issues were published in a variety of formats, featuring in-depth interviews with fellow design trailblazers and critical essays by an emerging group of young design writers.
This book, designed and edited by Emigre co-founder and designer Rudy VanderLans, is a selection of reprints, using original digital files, tracing Emigre's development from its early bitmap design days in the late 1980s through to the experimental layouts that defined the so called "Legibility Wars" of the late 1990s, to the critical design writing of the early 2000s.
Emigre No.70 is a must have book for those who missed out on all the excitement the first time around and for those who have been long time Emigre fans alike. Any graphic design library would be incomplete without it.
Featuring interviews with, among others, The Designers Republic, Allen Hori, Rick Valicenti, Vaughan Oliver, Mr. Keedy, Ed Fella, and essays by Lorraine Wild, Anne Burdick, Zuzana Licko, Kenneth FitzGerald, Andrew Blauvelt, Kalle Lasn, Rick Poynor and many more.
The book also includes the following bonus material:
32-Page booklet of Letters to the Editor
CD-Rom with music and videos published by Emigre
15 x 20 inch commemorative poster
Emigre magazine is in the permanent design collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, the Design Museum in London, and the Denver Art |
