Main Boards Silly Doggies Must Die What's going on
I thought this would be interesting. what's going on in your life right now. job, relationships, money, hobbies, sports, trouble, near future. i thought it'd be neat to see where everyone's at right now... right NOW i'm studying for my Kansas Life and Health insurance exam. i quit HR Block to sell insurance for my step-dad's company. he's like... area manager or something and makes rediculous cash (6 figures just in residual income, as in the shit that comes in automatically every year). supposadly there's no reason i shouldn't make 50 my first year, or 6 figures my 3rd. so if this all works out, i'll be looking at getting a new car. been driving my first car since i was 16. '93 honda accord with 181k+ miles on it. just replaced the brakes up at my dad's house last weekend, took most of the day sunday. my dad's going through a divorce from my step-mom. he divorced her and not only does she get half of everything (even though literally nothing was hers and she never paid for anything except groceries), now they're saying my dad will have to pay some maintenence bullshit because she's got a bad back problem and can't get insurance. of course she could get a JOB and get automatically covered... so now he may lose his house, boats, tools... everything he's worked for his entire life. but he's been very faithful (god) in the last few years so he's definately relying on that a lot for guidance and support. definately not the best of times. things seem to go back and forth with my girlfriend. i havn't figured out if the problem is me or her yet. i think i'm just not used to moving this slow with a girl. we havn't fucked yet and it's been... at least a month or so. this is something new to me and i think if i would just chill out and be patient i'll find it much more rewarding in the end. other than that... back to studying for this damn test. if i pass this thing, i garuntee you there will be some drunk/high/fucked up posts from me thursday night. my motivation:

so, on another board i frequent, well, it's a newish board but it used to be a last.fm group. anyway the other day someone said "meetup." and within three hours it had been decided upon that the last weekend of july we were all goiong to meet in chicago, drink a lot, put on a festival of all of our bands, and then drink some more. just saying if a bunch of kids on one board can do it and plan everything out within the span of two days, we probably could before the end of 2007.

Main Boards General Discussion US Elections 2008
I've been getting more interested in the upcoming election, especially since it seems like the world's about to explode with how we're doing things right now. So who're you rooting for right now? I was going to make this post specifically about Ron Paul because he's been getting so much internet publicity, but I think it's about time to open it up to a more general theme. So many people on Digg, youtube, and otherwise see the man as a saint. I watched a few videos and really like him, but then again I'm afraid of being caught up in a flurry of hype. His ideas sound so good to me that I'm worried they might not work. Then again we've been led by corporate fueled fascists for the past 7 years so it's hard to say... http://www.freecentury.com/2007/05/20/b ... ion-52007/ [note that this video has only 215 views ... which never changes even though it's being linked to hell off of digg... EDIT: It's fixed, but updating very slowly] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7yJgqnQ5Rc And then I was looking for polls to see how he was doing... and simply couldn't find many. Then I came across this site which pointed out that HE IS BEING CENSORED FROM MANY MAJOR POLLS and even left out of polls in his HOME STATE! WTF!??!?! http://www.usaelectionpolls.com/2008/ar ... polls.html http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/ma ... ictory.htm

Main Boards General Discussion Windows users, your fave apps?
What are you running to make things nice and smooth on your PC? We've had threads like this before, I'm sure, but fuck it. Some of these are freeware, some of them are payware that I've grabbed from torrent sites and wherever else. ---- http://en.softonic.com/ie/32372/TrayIt! - TrayIt!. Too much shit on your taskbar? Yeah, that sucks. Minimise absolutely any app or file to your systray just by holding ctrl when you click the minimise button. Double-clicking the icon in the systray will bring it back. TaskBar Shuffle. Got a bit of an obsessive/compulsive streak and can't handle seeing the Photoshop and Illustrator buttons held apart by some other app sitting between them on your taskbar? Use this to get some drag-and-drop shuffling going on. xplorer2 Pro. Dual-pane explorer to replace the functions of My Computer. allSnap. Another one for the obsessive/compulsive camp, this will snap all your windows together if you aren't the full-screen browsing type. Multi-monitor taskbar If you're running more than one monitor, this app will add a taskbar to each monitor and only show the apps that are running in that specific monitor. Some might find this useless, but I like the uniformity across my screens. CCleaner. Keep those useless temp files and other annoying shit files from clogging up your PC.

Main Boards General Discussion COMICS!
More people should read comics. Newsarama.com posted the full first issue of some new titles through Image comics. I read all 4 of these (plus a shit load of other stuff...) and I can attest that they are all incredibly awesome. Fear Agent Quote:
The Fear Agents are no more. Once known throughout the universe for driving three invading alien races from Earth, they stood as a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Now, Heath Huston drunkenly scuttles across the galaxy as an alien exterminator – the last of their ranks. Combining the aesthetic elements of all three of the genres that made EC comics the high water mark of sequential storytelling – science fiction, war, and horror – Heath’s adventures take readers on monthly jaunts to brave new worlds overrun by jellyfish brains, wild ape-men and rickety robots bent on intergalactic domination!
PREVIEW:http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/FearAgent/FearAgent01issue.htm Girls Quote:
Ethan Daniels is a typical bachelor who suffers from one, infallible truth: dealing with the opposite sex can be complicated. One night, he bumps into a mysterious woman who will change his life… and maybe even the world.
PREVIEW: http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Gi ... 1issue.htm Battle Pope Quote:
When he’s not leadin’ mass, he’s out kickin’ ass! After the Rapture the sole protector of the sinning masses is Battle Pope, and his trusty sidekick, Jesus. They’re the last line of defense in a world overrun with demons and depravity.
PREVIEW: http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Ba ... 1issue.htm Fell Quote:
Detective Richard Fell is transferred over the bridge from the big city to Snowtown, a feral district whose police roster numbers three-and-a-half people (one detective has no legs). Dumped in this collapsing urban trashzone, Richard Fell is starting all over again. In a place where nothing seems to make any sense, Fell clings to the one thing he knows to be true: Everybody's hiding something. Even him.
PREVIEW: http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Fe ... 1Issue.htm ALSO... Slacker should read this if he isn't already. DMZ Quote:
A new monthly series about the ultimate embedded war journalist trapped in a most unlikely war zone: the streets of New York City. Matty Roth, a naïve young man and aspiring photojournalist, lands a dream gig following a veteran war journalist into the heart of the DMZ. Things soon go terribly wrong and Matty finds himself lost and alone in a world he's only seen on television. There, he is faced with a choice: try to find a way off the island, or make his career with an assignment most journalists would kill for. But can he survive in a war zone long enough to report the truth?

Main Boards General Discussion Video Games
here are some games i've bought recently:
    ps2:
  • silent hill 3 after i checked out some screens of silent hill 4, i started getting excited about the series again and decided to pick up sh3. i was pretty dissapointed with 2, but the screens of 3 looked pretty rad. i think the graphics are a big jump from 2. character design is nice, lighting is really nice, sound is really nice. voice acting and monster design are pretty bad. some of the voices are on par with blue stinger (dc) if any of you guys played that. i still haven't beat it, but it's a pretty neat game. i'd recommend it. it's only $30 now.
  • manhunt fun game. mediocre environment design. character models are okay -- better than most rockstar games. the violent deaths are over the top and always interesting. i'd recommend this game. xbox:
  • beyond good & evil pretty neat game. nice graphics, kind of cheesy character design, a fun game. it's only $20 for all 3 systems now, so you might as well pick it up if you've got some extra scratch.
  • dead or alive volleyball another game which had it's price cut, so i picked it up. i'm into these games where you can win items and stuff. i'm one of those suckers who actually got into monster rancher and the like. if you can find it cheap and aren't afraid to look like a dirty bastard buying this cheesy game, i say go for it.
  • max payne 2 this looked pretty rad for the pc, but since my pc sucks, i picked it up for the xbox since the ps2 version is supposed to be loaded with low res textures and slowdown. well, the xbox version has a nice framerate and resolution and the textures aren't too low res, but it still looks like ass. animation is way primitive, they chopped down the poly count big time from the pc version. it's a fun game with a nice story and great voice acting, but i'd wait until it goes on sale. it's not worth the $50 i paid for it.
  • splinter cell this game was $5 if i bought max payne 2, so i picked it up. i'd heard good stuff about it, so imagine my surprise when i saw it in action. graphics look like ass. like much more than max payne. it's got some nice lighting every so often, but the low poly count, gay character design and animation and extremely shitty framerate are over the top. then the frame rate looks like it's about 25fps. jesus christ, this game was made a year or two ago, not in 1995. i haven't even gotten by the first level yet. i haven't had any desire to. this game isn't even worth the $5 i paid for it.
i haven't picked up anything for gamecube for a while. i haven't seen anything even remotely interesting for gc in months. zelda was the last game i picked up for gc and i haven't seen anything else since. i'm looking forward to the metal gear solid remake, though. that looks like it's shaped up since the initial info was released. that final fantasy game looks like it might be fun to, but i'll wait for that to hit the bargin bin. i'm really looking forward to ninja gaiden on xbox. that game is looking rad as hell. after shinobi dissapointed me on ps2, i was looking forward to a good ninja game. the suffering looks like it might be kind of fun too. that's comming out for ps2 and xbox.

Main Boards Silly Doggies Must Die Secret codes and 8-year-olds.
I'd been wanting to take my son on a scavenger hunt for some time, I guess work got the best of me and I never got around to it. One day I was reading the SA forums and stumbled onto a thread about a guy who did some secret scavenger hunt with his son, and I blatantly ripped it off. It began with a piece of mail to my son, no postage, no words other than his name on the envelope. The contents, one piece of paper with cryptic symbols on it. He was psyched and a bit concerned at the same time. He actually woke up a few nights later saying he was worried about being abducted by aliens or whoever wrote the letter. The next day I placed the codex in the mailbox. He was ecstatic. The message simply said "you will be contacted shortly" More excitement, more worries. He's got a very active imagination, I wondered if I shouldn't just end it right away with something quick and harmless. He got over the fear and kept a steady post, watching for the mailman. Every day. A week or so later, he received a message telling him to check a tinypic url, the url was a gif of more cryptic writing, it simply had his teacher's name. He received a message from his teacher [who almost blew the whole thing by telling him I'd given the message to him] the message from his teacher gave him a key and an email address and password, when he logged in, there was a message waiting from an anonymous sender, it was a Google Maps address pointing to the gas station around the corner. He couldn't quite figure out what it meant, so a few days passed before he asked if we could go there and see if anything was there. When he and his mother went there was a message waiting. No one seemed to know who'd left it. It was a crudely drawn map, very simple, with a #3 and an X. It was a map of our apartments, the X was our car-port and the key was to our storage unit. My son was cautious but excited. Inside was another tinypic url, it was a picture of our car's key fob with the trunk button circled. We checked the trunk, in it he found a Naruto Wii game with more instructions... to contact an email address and make a request. Once the request was received by this 'mystery person', a reply saying with some numbers was sent. A day later he received a Pokedex in the mail with coded letters on the pages corresponding to the numbers. When he arranged them, the next clue came. "Your assistance is required. e-mail if you accept the mission" or something to that effect. I'm sure I've scrambled the order of the clues/surprises a bit, but that's the gist of it. He's excitedly accepted his "mission" but still wonders who could have access to our mail, keys and car [he's 8]. The guy I stole the idea from ended up having the conclusion be the "rescue" of a kitten from a local shelter. I'd actually been thinking of having my son end up with some hermit crabs before I'd even read the conclusion of the other thread, pretty interesting. I'm planning on having the mission end up with him picking up some "prepaid" hermit crabs from our local pet shop. The next clue is waiting for him, hidden in a stake in our front lawn. I've sent him a coded map [the code is hidden using some fun css trickery on a webpage] leading him to the stake. The stake has another clue that will lead him somewhere else, and so on... If anyone has some really creative ideas of how to stretch this out a bit for him please post them. I don't want this to just last a few days, I want it to end in a few months, with some surprises in-between to keep his excitement level up.

So we're left trying to figure it out ourselves but I don't know enough about servers to fix the problem. So here's the info I have... - It's got 2 hot-swap SCSI drives in a mirror setup - With the drives in their original positions, when it boots it gives a prompt that says "1:ServeRAID-6M Slot 1, Power-on self-test takes up to 2 Min(s) 59 Sec(s)" - This begins to count down until it gets to 2 mins 1 sec, then freezes - With the drives swapped, it gives an error message stating that the drive does not have a valid boot sector, followed by "Operating System not found" Anyone have any idea what could be going on here?

Main Boards Silly Doggies Must Die Baby advice.
I know some of you have kids. Okay, my son is about 7 months old now, and he's starting to get separation anxiety. Basically he doesn't want to nap like he should because as soon as we leave the room he'll start crying. It's been suggested to us by a lot of sources that we let him "cry it out." Anyone have experience with this? He also wakes up a lot during the night. Up until a few weeks ago he had no problem sleeping through the night. He would wake up occassionally, but now it's literally once an hour or more. This means my wife and I get little to no real restful sleep. And tired parents = frustrated and irritable parents which = frustrated and irritable baby, which then leads to more sleep weirdness.. it's a shitty cycle. We use a pacifier for when he sleeps and when he loses it he tends to flip out. I know this means we need to ween him off of it, but it's really hard to just listen to your kid cry and ignore it. I'm doing it right now and not only is it giving me a headache, it's making me feel like a jerk. :p I'm waiting 5-10 minutes before I go in to soothe him, depending on how severe his flipping out is.

Main Boards Silly Doggies Must Die Alternative lyrics
I have a habit of changing the words in songs to use similar ones that rhyme, sometimes for fun, or sometimes they just emerge from my subconscious. Example: The lyrics to Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl' always sounded to me like they could be rewritten as: A few times I've been around that track So it's not just gonna happen like that Because I ain't no horny black girl I ain't no horny black girl A few times I've been around that track So it's not just gonna happen like that Because I ain't no Honor Blackman I ain't no Honor Blackman Ahem. While this link thinks she's singing "I ain’t no Harlem fat girl". Quote:
Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” is one of the most baffling pieces of music of the modern age. It’s got something to do with cheerleaders—that much is clear, judging from the chanting and the marching band that’s honking and tooting in the background. Beyond that, good luck deciphering the song’s ambiguities. We were so vexed by the mystery that is “Hollaback Girl” that we have devoted countless hours to its study.

Main Boards Silly Doggies Must Die The Annual Shodown Income Thread (2008)
Here's the return of another interesting shodown factoid. How is everyone doing with their careers? What is your current occupation (or school)? How much are we all making now? The $$$ is anonymous, but it'd be interesting to hear how jobs have changed over the last year. Do you like your job? Are you forced to work more than one? Has the recent economic slump groined your groin? And finally: Do you feel your income is enough to match your lifestyle? Are you happy with how much you make? Here's last year's results: --------------- Occupation: Flash Designer / Developer I'm currently working the same job as I did last year, and the same issues with excessive hours remain, but the pay situation has become more reasonable (after a lot of bitching and hard work). Overall I'm feeling satisfactory with it, but I hardly see daylight during the week and that continues to bother me. In another year I'm going to re-evaluate where I want to work. Quote:
Do you feel your income is enough to match your lifestyle? Are you happy with how much you make?
Even with making significantly more money than last year, I'm just barely comfortable with my spending now. I'm not sure if it's the rising gas and food prices that have done it, but I feel like you need to be making an assload of money to buy things without worrying.

Main Boards General Discussion The Sweet Deals Thread
just ordered these: - 100pk Ritek 8x DVD+R - $35 after $10 rebate. - 2 50pk Samsung 4x DVD+R $48. these are manufactured by taiyo yuden, which means they're top quality. i use these to burn stuff i want to archive. the pi error rate is insanely low with these -- you get absolutely perfect burns. i'm talking like under 10 per block (280 per block is considered a successful burn if you guys aren't up on the dvd media tests). the story is, the more pi errors you've got, the less likely it is that your disc will be readable on dvd players. there's also po errors, which are uncorrectable errors -- if you've got any of these, you've either got some really bad media or a bad burner. riteks are pretty good, though. the quality seems to vary from disc to disc, though. not consistent like the yudens and not as high quality period. --- post any good deals you find here, fellas. i figure we might as well have a thread devoted to sweet deals we find rather than posting them all individually.

Main Boards General Discussion Cars
Please post pics or info on cars that are less wellknown. I guess it largely depends on the part of the world you are in, so for some it will not be that unknown at all. But still, maybe it will be an interesting topic for car enthusiasts if you see a car here that you don't know much about. Nissan Cefiro AKA Ceffy. This car is pretty common in Japan and Australia etc., but I don't think there are that many in Europe and the USA (guessing). I've also been intrigued by the Toyota Soarer, which today has evolved into a model for the elite Lexus brand of Toyota. The Soarer is, according to what info I can find, on par with the iconic Nissan Skyline. Most people recognise a Mercedes, even if they don't care much about cars. The 190e Cosworth was a monster of a car and some people say that to this day, it is still one of the best they ever built. People joke about the color, the fact that it is a station wagon, the image of the Volvo brand. This thing will destroy almost anything, in speed but also literally should you ever collide with one. Volvo 850 T5-R, limited edition of the 1995 Volvo 850. The Ascari KZ1 is much more recent but not that widely known. It is not a very practical car, luxury and comfort wise, but it's extremely fast and agile.

Main Boards General Discussion Parent-proof backups for Windows?
I live in Chicago; my parents live outside New York and I'm home with them for the weekend. My mom has gotten herself a 500GB Western Digital MyBook external HDD in order to back up her computer. I need a backup program for her. The MyBook came with a program called Memeo AutoBackup/AutoSync, but holy fuck, is it ever slow! I started a full backup on her laptop's 34GB hard disk at 3:00 p.m. today; six hours later, it's still going. Shit, I could write down all the bits on her hard disk faster! Now, I drive a Mac, so I use SuperDuper. What I'm looking for is something similar for her Windows computer: a reliable, easy-to-use backup program that won't take days to back up. I'd prefer something that gives her a perfect copy. (I was hoping to set up RAID-1 mirroring, but as it turns out, you can't use that with external USB HDDs. What software do you recommend for Windows backup that's parent-proof? (I.e., doesn't require too much work from them)

It's Friday night and I'm home by myself... which means one thing: I'm resurrecting polls from 2007 to see how people's lives have changed in the past year. Last year's results: http://board.shodown.net/viewtopic.php?t=6938 What's your current living situation? How much are you paying for rent? Do you have permanent property (a house/condo)? How have things changed for you over this past year (for better or for worse)? Were you affected by the housing market crash? ----- I'm currently living by myself for $1250/mo. It's a pretty old building but in a nice neighborhood... and you can't do much better than that in a decent part of the LA area. Hey, I know a lot of people on here were talking about the game Spore. Well, it comes in September, but they released a "Creature Creator" recently. I wager it's a precursor to the full game and you'll be able to make creatures now that you can integrate into your Spore worlds later on. But anyway, my point is that this editor is addictive as hell and fun. There's a free trial version, but the full version is only $9.95, so I went ahead and got it. You can also pre-order Spore if you want. http://www.spore.com/ftl If you end up installing it, my Spore screen name is jackpocalypse. You can share your creations and whatnot. And yea, you can create dick monsters and other hilarious shit. Here's a few creatures I made. You can also record animations of your creatures and automatically upload them to Youtube using the game. I built a zombie PC with all kinds of different parts and it does what it needs to do. It's got onboard video (SiS 741) though and it sucks. So considering I have an Xbox 360 I decided to spend a couple of bucks on the cheapest Geforce in the 8-series range, the 8400 GS. It'll arrive tomorrow, but perhaps someone here has some experience with this card, or other cards in this range, so I can get an idea of what to expect. I'm not looking for a gaming monster, but I would like to play Spore for instance. Doesn't have to be super high res with highest settings, just acceptable play. Someone told me that since it's a PCI card I would need to have a (blue) PCI-Express slot to get any kind of performance. I don't have that slot and will that impact performance much? Thanks.

I've got some text in a cell, it's set up like this: <span> words <br> <span style="color; alignment; margin;>words I need centered</span> <br> more words </span> For some retarded reason [most likely my ignorance] it completely ignores both the alignment and margin tags for all of the encapsulated text. Am I going about this the wrong way? I need a paragraph, justified with margins of about 20px both sides, but sometimes I want the text to be centered... Using <center> tags breaks the certification, about which the client is being a complete stickler. [why, god? why?] Do I have to end the first span, do my centering, then create a new one for the rest of the text? Yes, I'm still a complete n00b with css and html. Not sure exactly what this means for Thailand, considering how little we know about their gov't and social structure here in the US... I can only hope whatever the outcome that their nation gets tougher on sex slavery as a result. That was one of the selling points of Bush in 2000 for women, he was hard on the international sex trade, nothing's come of it so far [surprise surprise] but maybe the results of this coup can strangle the area that supports their thriving sex slavery industry.
